Bangkok, 20 June 2012 - United
Overseas Bank (Thai) Public Company Limited (UOB (Thai)) has awarded Mr. Imrom Yunu the top prize in its 3rd UOB Painting Of The Year Competition (POY) for his painting ‘Faith’, an interpretation of faith’s strength and beauty in a modern society.
The most promising youth award was given to Mr Sorathorn Sueklang, for his mixed media painting “City” which illustrates the struggles and constraints of modern urban living.
The winning works and other entries will be showcased at the National Gallery from 21-30 June 2012. Mr. Yunu’s work will also be sent to Singapore to compete for the grand regional prize with the winners from Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
UOB (Thai) received more than 200 entries for this year’s POY competition, double the number from last year.
For the first time in the history of the competition, UOB (Thai) purchased and provided art supplies to underprivileged youth to encourage their participation in the competition. The funds were raised through “UOB Heartbeat Run/Walk”, the Bank’s annual employee fundraising event.
Three of the youth who received the art supplies, including
Mr Sueklang, were among the winners selected by independent
judging panel. In addition, six other youths will also
have their works displayed at the National Gallery.

Chief judge Professor Preecha Taothong, said: “There were many distinctive paintings
in the competition this year. The jury believes that his
winning piece will be a strong contender for the grand
regional prize awarded by UOB Singapore. Last year’s regional
prize winner was from Thailand and we hope to repeat this
achievement again this year.”
Mr. Wong Kim Choong, President & Chief Executive Officer, UOB (Thai), said: “Art
is a vital part of Thailand’s culture and heritage. We are proud to support the
development of the arts in Thailand, by giving budding local artists the opportunity
to showcase their work on a regional level.”
UOB (Thai) has held the POY annually since 2010 to promote and support art among
Thai youth and the general public. This competition provides an opportunity for
the contestants to submit their works to compete on a regional level. The first
UOB Group POY Competition and Exhibition was held in Singapore in 1982. Following
the success of Thailand’s first Competition in 2010, Indonesia and Malaysia launched
the Competition in 2011.
