UOB Wonder Lab: Youth for a Greener Tomorrow

From Waste to Wonder

Environmental challenges loom large across the world. Yet, sustainable change often begins with small actions close to home. UOB Thailand learned this lesson from its internal “Waste to Wonder” initiative, which encouraged staff to sort waste and adopt greener habits. The results convinced the bank that such behavioural shifts could spread further — especially among young people with the creativity and drive to design tomorrow.

That belief inspired Wonder Lab: Youth for a Greener Tomorrow, a new platform inviting youth to transform ideas into real projects that tackle environmental problems in their own communities.

Youth at Work

Open to participants aged 15–25 nationwide, the first year drew 453 applicants across 102 teams. Ten were selected to develop projects within just one month, before presenting their results at a showcase on 13 September.

“Young people have the drive and imagination to shape their own future — what they need is space, resources and encouragement,” said Dhornratana Olanhankij, Country Function Head of Brand, Media and Communications at UOB Thailand. “Wonder Lab was designed not as a contest of ideas alone, but as a platform where participants are supported by mentors and empowered to act.”

Ideas into Action

The finalists proved that environmental responsibility is not an abstract concept but part of daily life.

  • Born of Bamboobuilt a real-time app that helped schools cut food waste by 70 per cent in one month.
  • 6Pdrove a behavioural shift, boosting waste separation in schools by more than 300 per cent.
  • Jungle Natural Teamturned discarded pineapple leaves into biodegradable cat litter.
  • Nakhon Sawan Greenwove recycled plastic into textiles and bags, blending innovation with local craft.
  • GreenCycle Crewrepurposed plastic scraps into 3D printing filament.

Other projects ranged from board games on microplastics to sports markers made from plastic bags, and even air purifiers assembled from discarded electronics. Each reflected the same principle: small ideas can spark meaningful change when backed by determination and the right support.

Beyond Innovation

The outcomes went beyond creative prototypes. For many participants, UOB Wonder Lab offered lessons in teamwork, planning, systems thinking and public speaking — skills that will carry them into the future.

As one student from Jungle Natural Team noted: “We realised pineapple leaves, usually discarded in huge amounts, still had value. Turning them into eco-friendly cat litter showed us that the environment is not a distant concern — it’s around us, and we are all responsible.”

This sentiment was echoed by Nakhon Sawan Green, who blended recycled plastic with community weaving skills to create sustainable fabrics. Their journey underscored how innovation, tradition and responsibility can be woven together to tackle pressing challenges.

The Future Ahead

For UOB, Wonder Lab is only the beginning. The bank plans to connect the programme with private sector partners, civic groups and communities, aiming to scale up the prototypes into wider social and environmental impact.

“UOB Wonder Lab is not just a community project,” Dhornratana said. “It is about walking alongside youth to co-create a sustainable future.”
