UOB (Thai) launches an art appreciation programme for children with visual impairment

United Overseas Bank Thailand (UOB Thai) has launched an art appreciation programme called Please Touch for children with visual impairment.

The Please Touch programme aims to reach out to more than 100 children aged between six a nd 15 years old. The programme will teach the children to use their sense of touch to develop their creativity and to design their own art pieces using a tactile drawing kit.

The tactile drawing kit releases yarns of wool through a tool that works like a pencil. As the wool is drawn onto a Velcro board, the children feel the world of art through their fingertips.

The tactile drawing kit is developed by Klongdinsor Co., a Thai social enterprise that provides educational resources for children with visual impairment.

Mr Peter Foo, UOB Thai’s Chief Executive Officer, said that UOB Thai recognises the important role that art plays in society and believes that the appreciation of art should be made accessible to all.

“UOB Thai’s Please Touch programme is designed to inspire the children’s imagination and to encourage them to express themselves through art. It also provides our employees volunteering with the programme an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to society,” said Mr Foo.

In the last few weeks, 100 UOB Thai employees have signed up as volunteers for the Please Touch programme which comprises four workshops in Bangkok and the central provinces of Petchburi, Lopburi and Chonburi. In January next year, selected artworks created by the children through the Please touch programme will be exhibited at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. Visitors to the exhibition can choose to experience art with their fingers as the children.
