UOB invites emerging and established artists to share their talent
at Thailand’s 6th Painting of the Year competition

United Overseas Bank (Thai) is inviting Thai emerging and established artists to enter the Thailand’s UOB Painting of the Year competition, an annual art event organised by UOB (Thai) since 2010.

The UOB Painting of the Year is the only painting competition in Thailand that gives the winner the opportunity to interact with fellow artists at art exchange workshops overseas. The winning work will also be exhibited at the UOB Art Gallery in Singapore. These activities are part of the Bank’s expanded art programme this year.

Mr Peter Foo Moo Tan, Chief Executive Officer, UOB (Thai), said the UOB Painting of the Year competition is one of the ways in which the Bank can help artists realise their full potential.

“The UOB Painting of the Year competition is one of the ways for us to identify local artistic talent and to showcase Thai art to a wider community. We are committed to the organising of this competition as we continue to see past winners pursuing their passion and progressing with their art careers,” said Mr Foo.

UOB Group started its annual UOB Painting of the Year competition in Singapore in 1982 and has since extended it to Thailand in 2010 and then Malaysia and Indonesia in 2011. Over the years, the competition has helped discover and nurture emerging artists as they have taken their first steps in their career. It has also encouraged established artists to push their creative boundaries.

The competition has cultivated a strong alumni of artists across the region over the last 33 years. They include Ms Pannaphan Yodmanee from Thailand whose artworks on global warming are currently on exhibition at the Yuz Museum in Shanghai, China; Mr Gan Tee Sheng from Malaysia who is well-known for artworks depicting human desires and the subconscious mind; and Mr Antonius Subiyanto from Indonesia, the winner of the 2014 UOB Southeast Asian Painting of the Year award who has gone on to exhibit in numerous cities in his country.

The UOB Painting of the Year competition is divided into two categories – Emerging Artist and Established Artist to reflect the natural progression of an artist’s career. Last year’s top prize for Established Artist in Thailand was Mr Sinlapachai Chuchan for his vigorous brushstrokes that depicted lives of small fishermen in White Lines. The top prize for Emerging Artists went to Mr Jirasak Anoujohn for the piece titled Unaware which he used charcoal to tell story of an elderly person who chooses to see only good things in life.

Creating an artists’ creative exchange across Southeast Asia

As part of UOB’s wider art programme, the Bank is organising an art workshop today in Bangkok for the 2014 UOB Painting of the Year country winners from  Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, as well as local Thai artists. The artists will share their painting techniques with one another and create artworks together with renowned Thai artists Mr Suwit Jaipom and Mr Dinhin Rakpong-Asoke. Mr Jaipom is celebrated for his large crayon paintings and Mr Rakpong-Asoke for his portrait and illustration skills.

The workshop will also include a forum in which Mr Kamin Lertchaiprasert, an internationally recognised artist  and Mr Jarut Wongkumjantra, director and founder of HOF Art Space, will share their experiences on how artists can pursue their passion and carve a successful career.
