UOB invites all Thai artists to enter the 9th UOB Painting of the Year Competition as it extends its art outreach programme nationwide

United Overseas Bank (Thai) Public Company Limited (UOB (Thai)) launched its 9th UOB Painting of the Year competition for emerging and established Thai artists to reveal their artistic passion and talent. The annual competition demonstrates UOB’s commitment to connecting communities through art.

Mr. Sanchai Apisaksirikul, Managing Director and Country Head of Finance and Corporate Services, UOB (Thai), said the Bank has been uncovering, nurturing and promoting local artistic talent in Thailand through the UOB Painting of the Year competition for almost a decade. The Bank’s support of Southeast Asian art through its other programmes began four decades ago.

“As a long-term champion of Southeast Asian art, UOB provides opportunities for all artists – from those just starting out to the professionals who continue to seek breakthroughs – to be recognised on the regional art stage. We hope that the UOB Painting of the Year competition will continue to help inspire Thai artists and draw them closer to other art communities in Southeast Asia.   This is in line with our commitment to helping connect people, enrich lives and strengthen communities, and in turn contribute to social progress,” Mr Sanchai said.

As part of the UOB art outreach programme, UOB (Thai) will be holding “Artist Talk” gathering sessions in the provinces of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Songkla and Mahasarakham for the local art communities, UOB Painting of the Year alumni artists and Assistant Professor Somporn Rodboon to exchange their views on art. In addition, the Bank will be continuing its series of art workshops at 26 art universities nationwide. These sessions are venues for art students to interact with, and to be inspired by, renowned artists and curators.

The winner of last year’s UOB Thailand Painting of the Year and the 2017 UOB Southeast Asian Painting of the Year award was Mr. Sukit Choosri. It was the first time a Thai artist had won the regional award.

Mr. Choosri was one of the attendees at the official launch in Thailand. Others present included Assistant Professor Somporn Rodboon, prominent Thai curator and a committee member at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Ms. Pannaphan Yodmanee, 2010 UOB Painting of the Year Winner and the winner of the 11th Benesse Prize, Mr. Preyawit Nilachulaka (Palm Instinct), renowned singer and artist, art students and professors, as well as aspiring and established artists. At the event, the participants shared with one another their perspectives on art, the challenges and opportunities they faced and the experiences they gained from pursuing their passion at home and overseas.

Submissions for the 9th UOB Painting of the Year competition will be received from 31 August to 2 September 2018. For more competition details, please visit www.uobpoy.com
